Warning signs of a failing battery
Batteries rarely die conveniently. The clues usually build for a few weeks before they do:
- Slower cranking — the engine turns over sluggishly, especially when cold
- Dimming lights at idle, or interior lights that flicker
- A clicking sound instead of starting
- Frequent jump starts, or needing a charger more often than usual
- Stop-start no longer engaging, because the car protects itself when battery health drops
- Electrical oddities such as the clock resetting or several warning lights appearing together
Battery age and testing
Most lead-acid batteries last four to six years. Heat shortens their life in summer, but failures show up in cold weather because a cold battery delivers less current exactly when the engine needs more.
A proper test takes seconds: a garage measures the battery's state of health and charge under load, and checks the charging system at the same time. That matters — a failing alternator flattens a new battery within weeks, and it is worth ruling out before you pay for one.
Fitting and registration
Modern cars with stop-start or smart charging need the new battery registered to the vehicle's management system so charging is controlled correctly. It is a two-minute job with the right equipment, and skipping it shortens the new battery's life.
Ask whether the old battery is disposed of, and whether the terminal clamps and battery tray are cleaned and protected.
Choosing a battery
Battery size, terminal layout and cold-cranking amps all have to match your vehicle. A higher-capacity battery in the same physical size is usually worth the small extra cost, particularly on diesels.
