Electric Vehicle MOT Rules 2026 — What Independent Garages Need to Know
EVs will become subject to mandatory MOT testing from 2027 for vehicles over 3 years old. Here's what's changing and how garages should prepare.

Electric vehicles have been exempt from the MOT testing requirement since their introduction — but that's about to change. From 2027, EVs will be required to undergo annual MOT testing once they reach three years old.

What's Actually Changing

The current framework includes: visual inspection of high-voltage wiring and connectors, brake performance testing, lighting and signalling, structural integrity, tyre condition, and steering and suspension.

What Independent Garages Need to Do

Training. DVSA will require testers to complete additional training before testing EVs. Register interest with your local DVSA area office now.

Equipment. Basic EV safety equipment — insulated gloves, HV awareness training, isolation tools — will be required.

Customer communication. EV owners are a new customer demographic. Getting in front of them before 2027 builds the relationship early.

The Revenue Opportunity

There are currently around 1.2 million pure electric vehicles registered in the UK. By 2027, a significant portion will enter MOT eligibility — a substantial new revenue stream for garages that prepare now.

RecallIQ helps independent garages manage MOT reminders and customer communication across all vehicle types. Start free →
